Good question! We set out trying to self host Kafka, and realized that was going to be a headache, which obviously pushed us towards a hosted kafka solution. When we looked at pricing for that, it was an immediate no go. We went *very* bare bones after that, but it ultimately led us towards event hub, which was much more reasonably priced. Kinda wish we had discovered event hub earlier, but we made it there eventually
Makes total sense. I love Kafka's data semantics and guarantees but if you can get alternatives with similar enough characteristics at lower price point with less overhead, the alternatives will be hard to beat.
